Zhang Changlin (1970-2014) graduated from the Department of Industrial Design of Beijing Institute of Technology in 1993. In 1993, he started to work as automotive designer in the Design Workshop of the Body Department of the First Automobile Works (currently known as China FAW Group Corporation R & D Center). In 2011, he became the head of the Design Panel of the Society of Automotive Engineers of China and was qualified to serve as one of the first design evaluation experts in the society in the following year. Since 2000, he has been the Director of the Design Workshop of China FAW Group Corporation.

Zhang was responsible for the design of Hongqi luxury cars used for carrying the party elite, Hongqi L5, Hongqi H7, FAW Commercial Vehicle J4/J5/J6, FAW Xenia M80/S80, FAW-JIABAO, and FAW passenger cars, mineral carrying trucks, terminal tractor, fire trucks and military vehicles, among which the concept Hongqi luxury car won the “Best Concept Car of Beijing International Motor Show”, and Hongqi H7 was awarded the second prize of the National Award for Science and Technology Advancement. He was granted 71 patents on a variety of vehicle designs by the State Intellectual Property Office of the P.R.C, including “the design of driver’s cabin of FAW Commercial Vehicle J6”, “multiple designs of Hongqi luxury cars” and “multiple designs of Hongqi H7”.
